Fieldend

A careful path forward for a modern classic

Fieldend is a distinctive 1960s development of 51 homes designed by Span, celebrated for their progressive approach to community and design. Set within a Registered Park & Garden, these houses offer real joy, but also real challenges.

Like much post-war housing, they need sensitive upgrading to meet today’s expectations for comfort, sustainability and family life. My brief was to explore how one of these homes could be reimagined by improving thermal performance, reconfiguring the ground floor, upgrading bedrooms and bathrooms and investigating the potential for a modest, respectful extension.

My approach balances practical modern needs with deep respect for the original architectural intent. Understanding these buildings intimately gives me a unique perspective on what matters and what’s possible.

This project is about more than just one house. It’s a case study in how thoughtful retrofit can help mid-century housing evolve, preserving its spirit while making it more flexible, energy-efficient and fit for the future.
